Each wooden woodpecker sculpture is lovingly carved from a custom-selected bit of recycled timber to provide its own unique grain pattern and character. As each one is custom carved and mounted onto a section of gum branch and as such, they are all slightly different in shape and size. The utmost effort has been put in to sustainably source all of the materials used to ensure the most gentle of footprints.<\/p>\n

Wood\u00a0 – Totara and Gum<\/p>\n

The timber used for this bird has an interesting history. It comes from the totara tree which is very tricky source as it\u2019s no longer being logged. That\u2019s good news for this native as there are not many adult trees left.<\/p>\n

I was lucky enough to find a pile of large beams buried away in a reclamation yard in Christchurch. Having snapped them up I did some research and it turned out that the beams spent most of their life as a church roof. Unfortunately, due to the devastation of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the church had to be pulled down. It is a sad tale but I\u2019m happy to be giving the timber a revived purpose in life and I hope that in its new home it will be appreciated for many more years to come.<\/p>\n

Woodpeckers<\/b>\u00a0are part of the\u00a0family<\/a>\u00a0Picidae<\/b>, which also includes the\u00a0piculets<\/a>,\u00a0wrynecks<\/a>, and\u00a0sapsuckers<\/a>. Members of this family are found worldwide, except for\u00a0Australia<\/a>,\u00a0New Guinea<\/a>,\u00a0New Zealand<\/a>,\u00a0Madagascar<\/a>, and the extreme polar regions. Most species live in\u00a0forests<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0woodland<\/a>\u00a0habitats, although a few species are known that live in treeless areas, such as rocky hillsides and deserts, and the\u00a0Gila woodpecker<\/a>\u00a0specialises in exploiting cacti.<\/p>\n

Members of this family are chiefly known for their characteristic behaviour. They mostly forage for insect prey on the trunks and branches of trees, and often communicate by drumming with their beaks, producing a reverberatory sound that can be heard at some distance. Some species vary their diet with fruits, birds’ eggs, small animals, tree sap, human scraps, and\u00a0carrion<\/a>. They usually nest and roost in holes that they excavate in tree trunks, and their abandoned holes are of importance to other cavity-nesting birds. They sometimes come into conflict with humans when they make holes in buildings or feed on fruit crops, but perform a useful service by their removal of insect pests on trees.<\/p>\n

The Picidae are one of nine living families in the\u00a0order<\/a>\u00a0Piciformes<\/a>, the others being\u00a0barbets<\/a>\u00a0(comprising three families),\u00a0toucans<\/a>, toucan-barbets, and\u00a0honeyguides<\/a>, which (along with woodpeckers) comprise the\u00a0clade<\/a>\u00a0Pici<\/a>, and the\u00a0jacamars<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0puffbirds<\/a>\u00a0in the clade\u00a0Galbuli<\/a>.\u00a0DNA sequencing<\/a>\u00a0has confirmed the\u00a0sister relationships<\/a>\u00a0of these two groups. The family Picidae includes about 240\u00a0species<\/a>\u00a0arranged in 35\u00a0genera<\/a>. Almost 20 species are threatened with\u00a0extinction<\/a>\u00a0due to loss of habitat or\u00a0habitat fragmentation<\/a>, with one, the\u00a0Bermuda flicker<\/a>, being extinct and a further two possibly being so.<\/p>\n
